Let us hear you! Public Consultation now opens for the latest draft of Indonesian National Forest Stewardship Standards(NFSS)

The latest Indonesian NFSS Draft 3.0 (aka SDG(Standard Development Group)Standard in Indonesia) is finally launched. The 60 days online public consultation has started from 26 November 2018 to 25 January 2019.

The development process of NFSS in Indonesia began in 2014 with the establishment of the Standard Development Group(SDG). The SDG Team is led by The Indonesian Ecolabelling Institute (or Lembaga Ekolabel Indonesia/LEI). LEI is one of the most reputable non-profit organizations in Indonesia that strives to promote sustainable forest management practices through the implementation of forest certification standard with a national focus.

A field test of the current draft, which is opened for consultation now, has been done in Oct 2018. The first draft of the NFSS was published in April 2016.

Besides online public consultation, to better capture stakeholders’ input to the NFSS Standards, FSC Indonesia and the SDG Team are also doing face-to-face public consultation. We have invited forestry stakeholders in four core provinces in Indonesia, namely Pekanbaru (Riau Province), Jogjakarta (Special Region of Yogyakarta), Samarinda (East Kalimantan Province) and Sorong (West Papua Province), to meet with us and address the provincial-specific context from 26 November to 29 November 2018. On 10 December 2018, another significant offline face-to-face public consultation with a more country-wide focus will also be held in Jakarta.

FSC hopes more Indonesian forests can be well managed with the FSC Indonesian NFSS and that more Indonesian forest managers, forest concessionaires, and communities will be benefitted from having an FSC NFSS in place.  Throughout the standard development process, the SDG team has been making adaptation and adjustments to make it applicable to Indonesia.

FSC also supports the implementation of national government regulations. The Indonesia NFSS put SVLK as one of the national regulations that FMU must comply to ensure timber legality in Indonesia
